Objectives

The course examines methods of business communication with key stakeholders and provides practical applications for written, oral, and interpersonal communications. At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:

  • 1. Identify appropriate communication strategies for specific business situations.
  • 2. Write concise and organized documents using the appropriate communication format.
  • 3. Design an effective résumé and compose an appropriate cover letter for a specific purpose

or goal.

  • 4. Demonstrate appropriate verbal communication skills for interpersonal communications.
  • 5. Prepare written reports to meet specific business needs (proposal, analysis, and

recommendation).

  • 6. Present information using effective visual aids and graphics for data using charts and

tables.

  • 7. Demonstrate effective oral presentation skills with verbal and non-verbal proficiencies.

Methods

Individual and group assignments, teaching interaction during class, case studies, discussions, and simulations.

Prerequisites

Formal: Full-time students in the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences.

Academic: Students must be able to function in an English-speaking environment.

Assessment

Written (applied research) paper: You will be asked to research and write a paper that addresses topics of interest in the workplace today. You will also present your results to the class. Specific instructions concerning this project will be provided in a separate document. (40%)

Oral Presentations: You will be asked to give several presentations in class that include short and informal presentations, persuasive speech, and formal presentations both individually and in a group. (30%)

Writing Assignments: Students will apply their knowledge by developing, conducting, and evaluating a variety of weekly homework writing assignments. (30%)
