Course Objective

The media and communications industries inform, entertain and educate us while operating as sophisticated businesses with global footprints. This course introduces students to various ways of thinking about the media and communications industries, including the significance of ownership structures, the impact of new media technologies and the contemporary audience’s relationship with media content. Students will learn how the media industries and their content have been transformed by digitalisation, the internet and social media, and what these changes mean for contemporary audiences.

  • Module 1 Intro to Small Screen, Big Business: Media and Communications Industries and to the course assessment tasks.
  • Module 2 Analytical frameworks for media industries and texts
  • Module 3 Ownership and control of media industries
  • Module 4 The globalisation of media industries
  • Module 5 Convergence and the multi-platform distribution of media content
  • Module 6 Audiences and media content: are we all ‘produsers’ now?
  • Module 6 Reporting the news: how the internet transformed journalistic practice
  • Module 7 Continuity and change in media industries
  • Module 8 Repetition and variation: film and television genres
  • Module 9 Program formats: re-making the same program in multiple countries.
  • Module 10 Who's in the spotlight? Stars, celebrities and personalities
  • Module 11 Children and the media: a very special audience
  • Module 12 Reflective analysis and course conclusions

Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered in a lecture and workshop format, with active learning exercises. The language of instruction is English.

Bewertung

Die Prüfungsleistung ist erbracht und ECTS-Punkte werden zuerkannt, wenn Prüfungsleistungen zu zwei verschiedenen Kurseinheiten des Gesamtmoduls bestanden worden sind.

Die Prüfungsleistung für diese Kurseinheit geht zur Hälfte in die Prüfungsleistung für das Gesamtmodul ein.
